Springhill Medical Center is fortunate to have three full-time and three part-time
therapists. They perform intensive care procedures as well as being a vital part
of the hospital's lifesaving response team that handles patient emergencies. Besides
helping patients to breathe a little easier, the therapists at SMC conduct stress
tests under the direction of Dr. L. Gary Torrence, Internal Medicine, physician director
and Dr. Felix Torres, Internal Medicine.
Springhill Medical Center’s respiratory therapists perform procedures that are both
diagnostic and therapeutic. Some of these activities include:
- Take blood specimens and analyze them to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide,
and other gases using state-of-the-art equipment
- Cardiac lab services including stress testing with or without nuclear imaging and
electrocardiogram (EKG).
- Studying disorders of people with disruptive sleep patterns such as apnea.
- Encephalograms (EEG)
- Measuring the capacity of a patient's lungs to determine if there is impaired function
using a PFT or Pulmonary Function Test.
- Employing mechanical ventilation for treating patients who cannot breathe adequately
on their own.
- Administering medications in aerosol form to help alleviate breathing problems and
to help prevent respiratory infections.
- Maintaining a patient's artificial airway, one that may be in place to help the patient
who can't breathe through normal means.
Springhill Medical Center’s respiratory care is available 24 hours a day, 365 days
a year. For more information about the Respiratory Therapy department call (318)
